Family Service Association (FSA) is a private, nonprofit human service agency located in Oneonta, New York, serving Otsego County and the surrounding communities. FSA is seeking a strategic, collaborative, and mission-driven Executive Director to lead the organization into its next chapter. This is a unique opportunity for a hands-on leader who is passionate about community service, nonprofit sustainability, and innovative program development.
Position Overview
The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of the organization and is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and strategic direction of Family Service Association. Reporting to and working closely with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director ensures that FSA’s mission, programs, and services are effectively implemented and aligned with community needs.
As the leader of a small but impactful agency, the Executive Director will play a key role in shaping organizational culture, strengthening community partnerships, securing financial sustainability, and expanding FSA’s reach and effectiveness.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
- Provide visionary and day-to-day leadership for the organization
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop, implement, and evaluate strategic goals, policies, and long-range plans
- Serve as a visible ambassador for FSA within the community and among partner organizations
Program Oversight & Community Impact
- Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of programs that meet evolving community needs
- Ensure programs are outcome-driven and aligned with performance measures and funder requirements
- Identify opportunities for new or expanded services that support individuals and families
Fundraising & Resource Development
- Lead grant writing efforts, including identifying funding opportunities, preparing proposals, and managing reporting requirements
- Develop and implement innovative fundraising strategies, including individual giving, events, and community-based initiatives
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with funders, donors, and community stakeholders
Operations & Financial Management
- Oversee organizational finances, including budgeting, financial reporting, and fiscal sustainability
- Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and funding requirements
- Manage staff and contractors, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and mission-focused work environment
Community Engagement & Advocacy
- Build and strengthen partnerships with local agencies, schools, healthcare providers, and community leaders
- Represent FSA at community events, meetings, and public forums
- Advocate for the needs of individuals and families served by the organization
Qualifications & Experience
- Demonstrated leadership experience in a nonprofit, human services, or related field
- Strong knowledge of grant writing, funding sources, and performance measurement
- Experience with nonprofit operations, budgeting, and organizational management
- Proven ability to innovate in fundraising, program development, and community engagement
- Strong commitment to community service and empowering individuals to achieve self-sufficiency
- Excellent communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills
Preferred Attributes
- Experience leading a small or growing nonprofit organization
- Familiarity with rural or semi-rural community needs
